Happy Windrush Day – June 22nd 2020
Monday 22 June, marks the second-ever Windrush Day which commemorates the Windrush Generation and their legacy.
British West Indians were actively encouraged to come to the “motherland” to help rebuild a country that was physically shattered after the 2nd World War in addition to the catastrophic economic ramifications of it .
The first group (mainly men) arrived at Tilbury Docks on the Empire Windrush in 1948 and in fact my own mother arrived a year later in 1949 by ship also …..2 weeks at sea from Jamaica to Southampton .
The newly formed NHS , public transport and manufacturing were sectors in dire need of labour ……the Commonwealth subjects across the Caribbean gladly obliged .
Amongst many things today is a day to remember the efforts and sacrifices people are willing to go to seek employment and new opportunities .
